Fall Favourites

ColonnadeIn spite of autumn’s apparent cancellation due to my recent move, the calendar says that the season has officially begun. It seems as good a time as any—better, perhaps, than some—to share some of what I am enjoying or looking forward to enjoying.

  • Months after receiving a fervent recommendation, I am finally reading Colum McCann’s Let the Great World Spin. Don’t make the mistake I did—it’s truly wonderful, and worth immediate attention, not merely ‘to be read someday’ status.
  • I am intrigued to try making this tea.
  • As always, I am head over heels for sweet potatoes this time of year. I recently learned that in New Zealand they call them kumara. I’m plotting a cookie recipe soon, but this cake and a veggie version of this chili are next on the list.
  • I am however, fully enjoying the bounty of the local farmer’s market. Three kinds of kale at one stall? A stand devoted to mushrooms and another to flowers? I’m a happy camper.
  • I’m finally in artichoke country! I hardly know what to try first…maybe some paella? Or a simple braised side dish?
  • I’m starting to research Mexican cooking: I definitely want to read Jeffrey Pilcher’s Planet Taco: A Global History of Mexican Food.
  • More practically, La Cocina de Leslie.
  • And Pati’s Mexican Table.
  • And (when I can get my hands on it) Diana Kennedy’s Oxaca al Gusto.
  • Perhaps Hugo Ortega’s Mexican Street Food as well?
  • Many avocados will be sacrificed to this great cause, I warn you.
